The guard provides protection to the client and the hairstylist or to yourself if cutting your own hair. This helps to avoid unnecessary cuts and relieves any safety concerns while still being able to razor cut and achieve desired results.

All three blade types have a guard, but the guard differs based on your needs. The Standard Blades are a good starter blade and for those who want to guarantee they don't get cut. R-Type Blades work well for those who are more proficient in razor cutting as the blades have less guard, meaning it will cut off more hair and cut faster. It's also a good blade for those transitioning between a guarded and unguarded blade. Texturizing Blades have a unique guard pattern that cuts off 25% less hair than the Standard Blades. This blade is good for cutting fine or thin hair or in instances where you don't want to cut off too much hair but still give texture.

It really depends on a number of factors such whether you are doing the whole haircut with the razor, how thick the hair is and where you are cutting the hair on the blade. You should be able to get at least 1 full haircut from 1 blade, maybe more. To extend the life of the blade, use Jatai Blade Glide haircutting lotion and use the full blade surface to cut the hair to maximize the cutting area.
