This modern shag was designed with long-term wearability and natural texture in mind. My technique is to cut intuitively, working with the hair’s unique movement patterns to craft a shape that grows out seamlessly and supports low-maintenance styling.

To begin, significant length and bulk were removed by establishing a clean perimeter with shears. This foundation allowed for the overall shape to remain structured while still feeling soft and lived-in.

From there, I used a Feather Plier Razor to build out internal layers and customize the fringe. The razor work focused on carving into the shape with intention—starting from the shortest layers at the crown and working outward. I then razor cut the bangs, feathering subtly to blend into the face-framing and highlight my client’s facial structure.

By embracing the natural direction of the hair, the layering creates soft lift at the crown, light movement through the sides, and a fringe that opens up the face without requiring daily heat styling. This cut is ideal for clients seeking versatility, longevity, and a bit of edge with minimal styling effort.
