Prom Hair, Don't Care. 8 Prom Hairdo Ideas You'll Love

It's prom season! For high schoolers, it's an important event in their lives and one they will always remember. Getting dressed up, having a date, spending the evening with friends in a glammed up atmosphere and making it a night to remember are all part of the experience. For the ladies, looking pretty from the dress to the make-up to the hair is critical and part of the fun. So if you're looking for some prom hair ideas here are 8 fun ones that are sure to turn heads and make a young lady feel beautiful. Large French Braid This is not your ordinary French braid! Making a thick braid can make hair look fuller and more like an updo. It adds a focal point for the hair as the eyes are drawn to the back of the head all the way down. It works best on long hair, but if open to extensions, this can be anyone's hairstyle. The braid can be accented with jewels, flowers or hair barrettes for some extra pop. Updo with Succulent An updo is a classic hairstyle for any special event or occasion. But why not spruce it up with some flowers or maybe even a succulent? Using plants in the hair gives the style a more romantic, feminine look. It's best to use real succulents or flowers for the prettiest results, but fake plants can look fine if done well. Half Ponytail with Pearls If the desire is to keep the hair long and flowy, how about a half ponytail? This hairstyles pulls the hair back out of the face so the focal point is brought to the back of the head. With long flowing tendrils in a soft half pony tail, you can accent this popular hairstyle with a number of different trinkets such as pearls (shown here). It's beautiful, elegant and simple. What more can you ask for? Low Ponytail Ponytails are not just for working out. They can be made to work well with a prom dress too! This low ponytail incorporates straight slick back hair to the neckline. It's then wrapped with hair around the band with curls below. Perhaps substitute the curls for completely straight hair, crimped hair or teased hair. Get creative with the low ponytail and customize it toward the look of the dress. High Ponytail On the flip side is the high ponytail. With a little more edge and funk, a high ponytail can be done with medium or long hair. Give it some volume with extra teasing or leaving it stick straight for extra sophistication. A high ponytail keeps things fun, lighthearted and hassle free. Topsy Tail Remember the Topsy Tail? The topsy tail was all the rage in the early 1990's. With the a simple tool that featured a loop at one end and a sectioning tail end, you could create a distinctive look that was difficult to easily achieve without the tool. Today, the Topsy Tail look is used regularly in updos and special occasion hair. It's often glamorized with curls and hair trinkets (i.e. flowers, jewels, hair pins). You can use it to create a variety of hairstyles including those for prom. Give it a try. Hollywood Waves Popularized in the 1920's the Hollywood wave is a distinctive hairstyle where all the hair is waved in the exact same wave pattern. It's like a full cascade of waves that looks beautiful and gives a sophisticated looks. It can be done on somewhat short hair to long hair but it gives that unique vintage look that so many love these days. If hair isn't long enough, extensions can work too. The Hollywood wave has maintained popularity all this time and it's no secret why! Side Swept Braid Romantic and feminine. If you know how to braid, this one is simple. Great for long straight hair, it's a beautiful prom look without using hot curling irons, flat irons or hair rollers. The tutorial is in the video reel.  We hope these eight prom hair ideas give you some inspiration. Replicate them or take them and make them your own. Prom is a special time for high schoolers where half the fun is just getting ready! So make it a night for them to remember and give them the most beautiful hair they deserve. Hair Trends, Women

What's Trending for Men's Hair in 2022

While a large focus is always on women's hair trends, there is growing attention on men's hairstyles. With more options and a desire to create greater versatility for men, men's grooming, fashion and hairstyles are growing in a big way. Getting through the pandemic has been tough, but 2021 became a year of finally being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. With stores and businesses opening up, people started to pay more attention to their grooming and outward appearance. For men, there has been a stable trend in pompadours. Shaved on the sides and longer on top, the pompadour is a flattering, stylish and versatile men's haircut. For a while the trend was shaved on the sides with curly hair on top. This look was popularized by basketball players and has taken storm in the mainstream public. But this trend is cooling down so what's new? The pompadour is becoming more of a demi pompadour. While the hair is still longer on top, it is half as long. This is a more conservative, classic and easy to manage type of haircut that can easily be worn by any man. Nick Jonas is representing the demi pompadour nicely. In 2022, the demi pompadour will more popular than the longer hair pompadours we've been seeing in the past. The longer hair on top can achieve greater volume by using a razor to texturize the hair. Along the same lines, the classic crew cut continues to be popular and will remain popular throughout 2022. Like the bob, this hairstyle never goes out of style. Even shorter on the top, this is a very manageable hairstyle. Very little maintenance is needed on a daily basis. However, regular haircuts are required to keep it looking sharp and clean. In these haircuts, it's important to clean up necklines and sideburns for final finishes with a razor. 2022 will also feature some longer styles with parts. With longer hair on top reaching the ears, the hair can be worn straight with a center part or tousled to the side. Hair on the sides is somewhat short but not tight to the head. This is a more romantic look. It's sexy yet still masculine. Finneas and Sebastian Stan are popularizing this hairstyle in a big way. Moving into 2022, men's hair will remain on the shorter side. For the most part, men still like styles that are simple, easy to maintain yet look stylish. Tight fades will be popular for a long time but the trend of some longer hairstyles will be interesting watch. With longer hair comes more unique styles and more versatility. Only time will tell what will come to fruition. Hair Trends, Men
Women's Hair Trends for 2022: Bold, Sophisticated, Cute and Classic

Women's Hair Trends for 2022: Bold, Sophisticated, Cute and Classic

Can you believe it? It's almost 2022! 2021 was a whirlwind of a year but it flew by in a blink of an eye. While we continued to battle the trials and tribulations of the pandemic and adjusted to a new normal, hair trends continued to evolve. Afterall, in a world where we feel little control over larger economic and political situations, one thing we can control is our hair. Hair creativity will never cease to exist and the desire for new creative forms of expression through hair will continue to inspire us to keep moving forward. So what are our predictions? We believe 2022 will ring in with the old, but incorporate some new trending hairstyles. Let's take a look at our predictions. In 2021, there was a huge surge in long shags for women. The piecey, shaggy look, best achieved by a razor, gave life to hair. Voluminous and free, you would see shaggy rocker looks or more romantic wispy shag looks. With shorter layers in the back, volume was the name of the game for shags this year. Paired with some form of bangs (curtain bangs, baby bangs, side swept bangs) we believe the long shag will continue to trend in 2022. But we will see a greater focus on shorter shags in 2022. Also, soft, piecey and layered, the short shag is fun, cute and spunky. With a slight curl or wave, the layers of a short shag give more volume to the hair but it's less dramatic than the long shag. Along, the lines of the short shag, the French bob, will continue to grow. The French bob has a more European look, hence 'French.' Shorter than a short shag, the French bob is generally above chin length and is paired with some sort of bangs (baby bangs, heavy bangs). It's also somewhat curled or straight or sometimes curled at the ends. The French bob is a super cute haircut that can be sophisticated, playful and indie depending how it's styled. Look for more French bobs come 2022. The blunt bob will also trend in 2022. It's low maintenance, sleek and simple. Thanks to Kourtney Kardashian, she has popularized this haircut lately. With either a hard part down the middle or to the side, the stick straight look is sexy and sophisticated. It's a very precise cut best achieved with scissors. While it's always been a classic bob cut, its ability to be glamourous and versatile is the draw to this haircut right now. Lastly, how can we forget about the mullet. Who would have ever thought the mullet would come back in a big way? Well it has and it will continue to do so through 2022. But the mullet of today is not the same as the mullet of the past. Today's mullets are more colorful and have greater variation. Some mullets are long, some are short, some have shaved sides and others don't. The mullet has so much variety, it's the spice of life right now in trending haircuts. It's rebellious. It's bold. It's rocker. And people like this haircut because they get to express themselves in a cool and fun way. But one of the most unique things about this haircut is that it crosses genders. Both men and women have taken to this haircut in a big way. Androgynous hairstyles are a trend we will see more of in the future as gender lines continue to blur. Speaking of expression, the other trendy haircut for 2022 may just be the shaved head with hair dye designs. With this hairstyle, you are sure to stand out and make a statement. Rebellious, the shaved head is being popularized by women with unique and creative designs made with hair dye. From animal print to bright colors to checkers, flames and flowers, the options are limitless. Not only is hair dye used to create a design but hair is also cut to create patterns within the hair. We never truly know what will take off each year, but based on what we are seeing here at the end of 2021 we are going to expand on what's already popular in 2021. Or perhaps you will create a new trend. Until then, enjoy the rest of the year and we look forward to seeing what 2022 brings to the hair industry. Hair Trends, Women

Women's Hair Trends: Spring - Summer 2021

Women's Hair Trends: Spring - Summer 2021

My way of interpreting coming trends is to look at what's popular now and what's on its way out for the next season. I think that Spring-Summer 2021 hair fashion will reflect the 'opposite of now' and bring us some beautiful natural transitions. Razor Cut Bob There are certain basic looks that never seem to go out of style - they simply vary from year to year, and in some cases, decade to decade. The Bob is a great example of a look that has been with us for decades, but is tremendously versatile in terms of length, shape, and texture. For this season, we'll be seeing lots of interior movement with more shattered thinner bottom with wispy ends. The razor cut Bob takes on longer layers and texture but less volume ... the overall feeling is more light and airy for Spring. I feel that the leading Shag trend as we know it is on its way out. The traditional Shag is transitioning from a solid shape into a more structured shape and not so wispy at the ends.   Beach Waves As for Beach Waves that have been popular for so long, they are here to stay! This look has evolved from more than a decade ago (started out with those barrel sausage curls of Jessica Simpson and then 'relaxed' over the years). Of course, we always want to keep this in-demand look fresh and updated. The length can vary for the look of beach waves and it still looks good on people. For this season, I use a round brush for texture and volume but not as much curve ... the overall look is more relaxed. I am also building in tons of layers throughout and create different bangs - like curtain bangs and other variations that compliment the client. Razor cutting is a key tool to achieving the season's newest looks. (I just shot an educational video for the Jatai Academy that shows how I create the newest looks with the Jatai Feather Razor. As a stylist, doing razor cutting forces me to look at each section but really analyze 'section by section'. I don't just look at the shape but how each shape creates light and shadow ... how I create movement by cutting very shattered or solid but always soft ... cutting a little here and a little there. I sculpt with the Feather Razor and like being tuned in to the texture and pattern - not just caring about and cutting a shape. I also find that razor cutting allows for less fine tuning at the ends. 2021 Men's Hair & Menswear Top 3 Influences

2021 Men's Hair & Menswear Top 3 Influences

It's an eclectic fashion scene out there for Spring-Summer 2021 Men's Hair. With the men's designer collections running so diverse, it's no wonder that this season's extra hair styles vary so much in support of what we're all seeing from the neck down! Designers like Kuon featured male models wearing shorter, lighter top hair with deeper sideburns and hair down on forehead. Tokyo 2021 showed fades and texture on top. The Saint Lauren collection was all about diversity, from longer waves to short Afros to simply way long straight hair. Designer Stan went with the windblown, beach tousled surfer looks, worn with upcycled vintage remnants with patchwork jackets in his collection. I think there are three main influences that are driving men's hair fashion this season. I call them Euro-Centric, African Embraced and West Coast Surfer influences on men of all ages. I interpret the Euro-Centric trends from my industry friends in London and Europe, who I reach out to regularly to learn 'what's hot' and 'what's not'. We all know that the European trends, especially in London' always travel immediately across the pond. Afro-Centric Inspired Hair Going 'more Euro' this season means lots of short texture looks with high top fades ... tons of texture at the top and really high and tight on the sides. The overall look is more matte versus shine - no more wet looks anymore. Preferred styling and shaping products include texture powders and more clay for the matte finish and high hold ... light on the pomade! Curls are also huge, with lots of mid-length combovers. Also, longer hair is making a comeback, growing out to neck and shoulder length. Many of my students at Hair Lab Detroit Barbering School like the longer cuts. West Coast Surfer The African community-inspired looks include the high top fade variations with pop color added for accent -and comb twists. I recommend using a curl sponge to add product to Afro-textured hair - it's a fantastic urban ethnic market tool for you. To color or lighten hair - or to put fun vivids inside or on top of hair - just twist your curl sponge into a circular motion. Creating blonde streaks to create light in the hair, or simply white washing the tips, adds kick and dimension to any high top fade. Finally, like the ebb and flow of the Pacific tide, the U.S. West Coast Surfer looks never stop influencing the global and the national men's hair fashion scene. Watch for those soft wavy beachy looks ... more beach wave than curl this season. The sun-kissed blonde highlights make any guy look like he's just been surfing, diving, pooling, or beachcombing no matter where you live ... a desired look no matter what the season. One thing's for sure ... men always want to look authentic in the way they dress or wear their hair. Finally, men care just as much about the hair as they do their clothes. Men's grooming overall is now high on the pedestal ... more men are taking better care of themselves which I think is great. As a barber, the cutting tools I use is so important to achieve the most current hair trends. For more piecey textures, the Feather Razors work best for me. I also do lots of shear work for classic shear over comb techniques. For this season's looks, I am definitely using more blends, razors, shears for point cutting, and minimal use of clippers except for those tight fades. Hair Trends, Men
