How to Cut Your Own Face Framing Layers with a Nape & Body Razor with Jake Thompson

Jake Thompson is a fashion forward hairstylist with expert knowledge and accolades to prove it. In this video Jake address face framing layers, how to cut as well as style them. His cutting and styling techniques can be done by professionals or DIYers. If you want to learn how to cut your own face framing layers and style it in two different ways, watch this video.

He starts with using a comb to section the hair into two halves. Both sides are cut the same way using a Feather Nape & Body Razor. He pulls the hair forward on each side and then uses the razor to seamlessly cut from the eye area all the way down to the end of the hair. It’s a simple technique that allows for proper face framing which creates a little bit of bangs but mostly gives a layered shape to the front.

There are no scissors or point cutting done in this tutorial. It’s all razor. He uses the Feather Nape & Body Razor (an older model) which is traditionally meant for shaving the nape area or small areas. But some stylists have been known to use it to cut hair due to its small blade profile and ability to create detail.

If you’re looking for how to face frame hair at home, follow his directions step by step, making sure the hair is wet and you cut the full length of the hair all the way to the ends. Since this video teaches you how to cut hair from front, this makes it the perfect DIY face framing layers tutorial.

Just FYI, this type of cutting and styling works best on straight hair as opposed to curly hair or wavy hair. You can cut long hair with face framing layers and also face frame bangs. A face frame cut opens up the face and helps accentuate your face.

After he’s done cutting, he styles each side differently with different brushes to show that styling can make a big difference in the overall end result. When you view the mannequin head, one side flares out for a more 70’s look. The other side is styled more inward and straight for a 90’s or early 2000’s look. Enjoy the class!
