Clean Razor Cutting Techniques – A Technical Deep Dive

Here’s another Technical Deep Dive tutorial video on how to cut hair with a razor, where Russell Mayes does a deep dive into razor cutting techniques to achieve clean and precise cuts using two different razor tools – one with a guard and one without.

There are times when you’re cutting hair with razor and want a clean more blunt line but you want that line to have the softness of a razor. It’s not always about filleting the hair until it becomes string. Then there are times when you want to create movement and a little texture in sections of hair. Russel teaches techniques for creating a more blunt line as well as a razor technique for introducing movement.

In this class Russell gives you razor cutting hair tips on how to hold the razor properly for the best dexterity and handling. He shows you how to angle the razor in the hair and how to cut the hair while utilizing all of the blade so you get the most out of each blade.

In this step-by-step how to razor cut hair tutorial, you’ll learn:

Standard: Using the Feather Styling Razor (uses guarded blades), learn techniques from combing and sectioning to understanding the fundamentals of how to hold and effectively use a razor to cut a clean line. This cutting razor with a guard is perfect for beginners or those who want more safety when cutting with razor.

Advanced: Using the Feather Plier Razor (uses unguarded blades), master clean cut lines without fear of cuticle damage while maintaining complete control of the razor. These are precision hair cutting techniques as the Plier gives more control over your cuts.

All of these techniques are useful in the salon to have more control over the outcome of your razor cuts. They are considered razor cutting techniques for beginners and a refresher for seasoned users.

Both the Feather Styling Razor and Feather Plier Razor are light in weight but have good balance. You will need a razor to cut hair so you can see them in our shop if you’d like to purchase. Both of these razors are considered to be a professional razor for hair cutting.

Cutting hair with a razor is fun, but it takes a bit of practice. These different cutting techniques for hair will give you the confidence you need to get you started on how to razor hair and get you on the path to creating amazing razor hair cuts.

If you want to learn more about how to cut hair using a razor, see our Razor Fundamentals Course where Russell give even more detail like how how to remove bulk from hair, channel cutting, adding texture, creating layers and then demonstrating all of these techniques through various haircuts. By the end of the course you should have a good foundation for how to cut with a razor and create amazing razored hairstyles.
